Vehicle trackers: what to consider before fitting
Vehicle trackers can help owners locate or recover vehicles, but features vary considerably. A device that shows a parking position is not the same as a monitored stolen-vehicle recovery service.
Tracking and recovery
Ask whether the system offers live location updates, theft alerts, a staffed monitoring centre and a defined recovery process. Coverage, connectivity and service availability may vary.
Subscriptions and ongoing costs
Compare installation costs with monthly or annual service fees, renewal terms and cancellation arrangements. Confirm what happens when a subscription expires.
Insurance requirements
Some insurers specify particular tracker categories or approved systems. Ask your insurer what evidence and certification they require before buying. Do not assume every tracker meets an insurance condition.
Questions to ask an installer
- Which features are included and which need a subscription?
- What happens if the vehicle battery is disconnected?
- How are theft alerts delivered and who responds?
- What warranty and aftercare are included?
