Autowatch Ghost generations

Ghost-II vs Ghost-III vs Ghost CAN-FD: what actually changed

The short answer: there are two current Ghost generations, not three. The Ghost-II (also written Ghost 2 or Ghost II) works on a single standard CAN network. The Ghost-III is the newer platform with CAN-FD support and two CAN networks. "Ghost CAN-FD" is not a separate model: it is how Autowatch describes the Ghost-III on its own product page.

What CAN-FD means for your car

CAN is the data network that lets a car's control units talk to each other. CAN-FD (flexible data rate) is a faster version used on many newer vehicle platforms. Autowatch's FAQ is explicit that older immobilisers, including the Ghost-II, do not support CAN-FD. On a CAN-FD car, the Ghost-III is therefore the only Ghost that can be fitted. On an older car, both may be listed, and Autowatch's compatibility guide (updated 2 November 2026) shows Ghost-II and Ghost-III rows for each vehicle.

I already have a Ghost-II. Should I upgrade?

Not because of the generation alone. Autowatch says an installed Ghost-II does not need to be upgraded. What matters more is how yours is set up. Autowatch warns that if a fob is paired, a thief holding both the car key and that fob can drive without the sequence, and a paired phone in range will disarm it too. If you want the strongest set-up, ask your installer about a sequence-only configuration.

Other Ghost names you might see

Sellers use labels such as Ghost 3, Ghost III, Ghost-3 and Ghost CAN-FD for the same product. When we checked Autowatch's product listing on 6 November 2026, the Ghost range held only the Ghost-II CANbus and Ghost-III CAN-FD models. We found no current Ghost Lite, Ghost Pro or motorcycle Ghost from Autowatch. If a quote names something else, ask for the Autowatch product page before you pay.

Where the Ghost sits in dual layer protection

A Ghost is a prevention layer. It does nothing once a car has been lifted onto a trailer, and it carries no Thatcham tracker category. Autowatch itself lists S5 and S7 tracking as add-ons for the Ghost-III. Our guides to an S5 tracker with a Ghost and an S7 tracker with a Ghost explain which pairing fits which car.

Common questions

Is Ghost CAN-FD a different product from Ghost-III?

No. Autowatch titles its Ghost-III page "Ghost III CAN-FD Immobiliser". The CAN-FD label describes the network it supports.

Will a Ghost-II stop working when production ends?

Autowatch says an already installed Ghost-II does not need replacing. Ask your installer about ongoing support for your unit.

Is either Ghost Thatcham Category 2?

Not according to Autowatch's pages. The Ghost-II is TASSA verified; no Thatcham category is claimed for either generation.

Can a Ghost-III be fitted to an older car?

Often, yes. Autowatch says every vehicle on its compatibility guide is supported by the Ghost-III, including legacy CAN cars.
