Lexus NX security guide
The short answer: the Lexus NX was the eighth most stolen car in the UK in 2025, with 951 thefts, and Lexus as a brand recorded 2,031. That is a striking number for a premium SUV sold in far smaller volumes than a Fiesta or Golf. NX owners face the same electronic theft methods as Toyota drivers, so the answer is layered: an immobiliser the network cannot fool, plus a tracker for recovery.

Why so many NX are stolen
The NX shares much of its electronic architecture with Toyota models, so a tool built for one often works on the other. Lexus hybrids are prized abroad and for their parts, and a nearly new NX is valuable enough to justify organised theft. Most NX thefts we hear about happen overnight from driveways.
The methods to plan for
Lexus keys use smart entry, which leaves the NX exposed to relay devices that extend the reach of a key indoors. The CAN injection devices sold to thieves list the NX among the Lexus models they claim to support: they reach the car's wiring behind the front bumper and send the "key present" messages directly, the method documented on a RAV4 by Canis Automotive Labs on a closely related Toyota. Because the second method never touches the key, the defence has to sit inside the car.
A sensible NX protection plan
- Immobiliser first. A CAN immobiliser such as the Autowatch Ghost asks for a personal button sequence before the NX will drive. Have the installer confirm it supports your model year, including the second-generation NX launched in 2021.
- Tracker second. A monitored tracker shortens the window before a stolen NX is in a container. If your insurer names a category, our insurance approved trackers guide explains what to ask them.
- Habits that cost nothing. Keep fobs away from the front door, turn off the fob's wireless function where the handbook allows, and park so the front of the car is hard to reach.
Lexus Link and the manufacturer app
The Lexus app can show where the car was last parked, but it is not a monitored stolen-vehicle service and relies on a connection the thief may block. Treat it as a convenience, not a recovery plan.
Common questions
Is the new NX safer than the old one?
Newer cars generally have better security, but both generations appear in theft reports. Protect by year and specification, not by assumption.
Will fitting an immobiliser affect my Lexus warranty?
A professionally fitted, non-invasive system should not, but keep the installation certificate and check your warranty terms.
Who fits it?
One of our own engineers or a partner installer near you, all TASSA and Autowatch approved. We tell you which before booking.
