Toyota RAV4 security: stopping keyless and CAN theft
The short answer: 1,319 Toyota RAV4s were reported stolen in the UK in 2025, making it the fourth most stolen model and the most stolen SUV. Most are taken without the key, through the car's own electronics. A second layer that the thief cannot talk to, such as a PIN-code immobiliser, combined with a monitored tracker, is the set-up most RAV4 owners we speak to choose.

Why the RAV4 is targeted
The RAV4 holds its value, is in demand overseas and its parts sell easily. Hybrid versions add an expensive battery and drive system that is attractive to breakers. Because it is so common, a stolen RAV4 also blends in on the road and in shipping containers.
How RAV4s are stolen
Relay attacks on keyless entry
On versions with smart entry, one thief stands near the house with a receiver that picks up the key fob's signal and relays it to an accomplice by the car. The RAV4 believes the key is beside it, unlocks and starts. A signal-blocking pouch for the fob defeats this method, but only if every key is stored in one, every night.
CAN injection through the headlight
In 2023 security researchers at Canis Automotive Labs published how a RAV4 belonging to one of the researchers had been stolen: thieves pulled the front bumper away, unplugged a headlight connector and wired in a device hidden inside a Bluetooth speaker case. It sent fake messages onto the car's internal network telling it a valid key was present. No key signal is needed at all, so a fob pouch does not help.
What actually stops it
- A CAN-bus immobiliser with a PIN sequence, such as the Autowatch Ghost, prevents the engine starting until a code is entered on the existing steering wheel or dashboard buttons. Injected messages do not supply that code. Ask the installer to confirm compatibility with your RAV4's year and engine.
- A monitored tracker lets a stolen RAV4 be located and the police told quickly. If your insurer specifies a category, match it exactly; our S5 or S7 comparison explains the difference.
- Physical deterrents, such as a quality steering-wheel lock, slow thieves down and are visible from outside.
- Software updates from a Toyota dealer, where available for your car, close some electronic gaps.
Hybrid and plug-in RAV4s
Hybrid models are popular for both their resale value and the parts inside them. When fitting a tracker or immobiliser to a hybrid, the installer needs to know the exact model year and whether it is a plug-in, because wiring routes and the standby power draw both matter. Our TASSA and Autowatch approved installers check this before the appointment.
Common questions
Does a Faraday pouch protect a RAV4?
It stops a relay attack on the key signal, but not CAN injection, which does not use the key at all. Use one, but not as your only protection.
Will my insurer insist on a tracker for a RAV4?
Some insurers add a tracker condition to high-theft models. Only your insurer can tell you whether yours does and which category it accepts.
Can an immobiliser be fitted to a leased RAV4?
Usually, with the lessor's permission. Check your agreement first, and keep the installation certificate.
